For the first time, the word "Ukraine", or more precisely "Oukraine", appears in chronicles in 1187 in connection with the death of the prince of Pereiaslav. About him, "Oukraine was much lamented".
In those ancient, and not so ancient times, "Ukraines" were called all territories adjacent to the borders of the principalities that existed in that historical period. Ukraine, Oukraine - a land on the edge, on the very border, a borderland, which always carried the danger of a clash with an external enemy. These could be Lithuanians, Poles, Horde rulers, Crimean Tatars, and many others. Therefore, there were many Ukraines: Okskaya, Ryazan, Tula, Mtsensk, Pskov, Smolensk, Astrakhan, Tatar, Kazan, Siberian, etc.
Ukraines were also called lands whose inhabitants, even after converting to Christianity, continued to pray to pagan gods. In the 16th century, this name became established for Russian lands that came under the rule of the Polish crown. By the way, other Slavic peoples also have their own Ukraines (Kraines) - Serbian Kraine in Croatia, Belakraine - on the southern edge of Slovenia.
Military men, whose place of service was "... Siberia, Astrakhan and other Ukrainian cities", were called Ukrainniks or Ukrainians in Russia. Also, Ukrainians eventually became known as Polish nobles, mainly living in the present-day Kursk and Kharkiv regions.
However, the Cossacks of the Zaporizhian Sich, who guarded the southern Polish borders on the middle Dnieper, were Little Russians. The relationship with their "employers" - Catholics - was complicated for Orthodox Cossacks, and this story ended in 1654 with the Pereiaslav Council, that is, the reunification of Ukraine with Russia.
Taras Shevchenko was an Orthodox Little Russian by passport, and the famous Ukrainian writers Ivan Franko and Lesya Ukrainka were Ruthenians, of which they were very proud.
In general, before the October Revolution, only those who converted from the Orthodox faith to Greek Catholicism were considered Ukrainians. So "Ukrainian" was a religious, not a national identity.
Ukraine as a state entity first appeared on the political map of the world in 1917. This event was preceded by the development of the "Ukraine" project. As a result of its implementation, a state was supposed to emerge that would become a buffer between Austria-Hungary and Russia.
After the First World War, two revolutions and the collapse of the Russian Empire, the nationalist Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed in Kiev, which existed with interruptions until 1920. At the same time, the Bolsheviks created the Ukrainian People's Republic of Soviets in Kharkiv, which existed for just a few months. In 1922, the Ukrainian SSR was formed, which in 1991 as a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union transformed into modern Ukraine.
