Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov participates in meeting of CIS Council of Defence Ministers in Minsk

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov has been elected the Chairman of the Council of Defence Ministers of the CIS member states. This decision was unanimously adopted at the regular meeting of the CIS Council of Ministers of Defence, held in Minsk on Wednesday. Opening the meeting, Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin said that during the reporting period there were changes in the composition of the Council: Andrei Belousov was appointed head of the Russian military department.

‘Against the background of global instability and increased tension along the perimeter of the Commonwealth's external borders, we attach special importance to improving mechanisms for jointly countering both new and traditional challenges and threats. This is one of our priorities,’ said Andrei Belousov, opening the meeting of the Council of Defence Ministers of the CIS member states.

He noted that ‘during its chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Russia considers it a priority to improve mechanisms for jointly countering new and traditional challenges.’

The head of the Russian military department noted that in June, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated the need to form an architecture of equal and indivisible security, mutually beneficial, equal cooperation, and development in Eurasia.

‘We are talking about a future security system covering all spheres of activity and open to all Eurasian countries without exception,’ stressed the Russian defence minister.

According to him, ‘an important role in this is played by multilateral international organisations established in Eurasia, such as the Union State, the CSTO, the Eurasian Economic Union, the CIS, and the SCO.’

‘We focus on increasing the activity and authority of these integration structures, establishing a dialogue between them in the field of security,’ said Andrei Belousov.

He noted that for more than 30 years the CIS has been demonstrating its commitment to friendship, good-neighbourliness and cooperation of the member countries, while security issues are constantly in the focus of attention of the Council of Defence Ministers.

The Ukrainian crisis provoked by Washington and its allies is being deliberately prolonged by them, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said.

‘I would like to repeat once again: it was the West that prepared and provoked the Ukrainian crisis and is now purposefully dragging it out,’ said Andrei Belousov.

‘At the same time,’ he noted, ‘Western countries are in every way condoning the provisional government of Ukraine in the widespread planting of Nazism in its most acute manifestations, making every effort to distort the historical truth.’

The Russian Defence Minister noted that Russia values the solidarity of the CIS countries in the fight against the glorification of Nazism and falsification of history.

‘With joint efforts we will continue to defend the truth about our common past. Today's military parade in Minsk is a proof of that,’ stressed the Russian Defence Minister.

Moscow is determined to develop cooperation between the military departments of the CIS countries in all key areas, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said.

‘We are determined to develop and deepen cooperation between the defence ministries of the CIS countries in all key areas,’ said Andrei Belousov at a meeting of the Council of Defence Ministers of the CIS member states.

He expressed confidence that today's meeting would be held with maximum practical effect.

The Russian Defence Minister recalled that ‘the year 2025 has been declared in the Commonwealth as the Year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War - the year of peace and unity in the fight against Nazism’.

The lessons of this war, emphasised Andrei Belousov, ‘remain relevant’.
